Top 2 set just about as morningside squander plenty of chances

Morningside will be extremely dissapointed with yesterdays output. Too many skill error and not kicking goals when they were desperately needed. It looked like they were getting back into old habbits with so many behinds in the space ofr 3 quarters and that's where they blew the game. it was certainly a struggle for both teams in the first 2qtrs and after half time the vultures pounced and the siders simply stopped and looked on as players like Ash Evans and co ran rampant. Ash Evans was best on ground for mine with Dean page who was leading strongly all day for the vultures. The loss leaves the siders in 3rd with a gameclear of the vultures with 3 games to go till finals and the vultures are a game clear in 4th and looking at a home final in the first week of the finals...

Vultures 4 rounds to go

The Vultures came into the season maybe looking at capitalizing on last years great finish too the season, where they went on a tear to make the grand final, too go down by 4 goals after a fighting comeback. They started off the season with an absolute wimper and were 0 and 3 going into the round 4 game against aspley. After giving Aspley a flogging of 17 goals, they haven't looked back and they have gradually gottten all their big names back and they are starting to fire.

their last 4 games will be tough
Morningside. This is game where they will have too win. Redlands are breathing down their necks in 6th and they need too keep winning too stay in the 5 and maybe snag a home final. The battles across the field in this one will be a cracker. They are both so evenly matched and it should be a great game of footy
Lions. The vultures should win this game and win it well. The lions will be struggling too field a half decent side3 by this time and the seniors are well outof the finals race and the playing line up will be interesting too see how many listed players will be dropped back for this game and how many young guns will be pushed up into the senior side
Southport. Down there they will be extremely tough too beat and the last time they playe3d southport. They couldn't stop Southports marking prowess. Last time they didn't have Tommy tarrent playing. The vulture need too win this game and cement 5th or even 4th
Thunder. This might a prelude too week 1 of the finals. Whoever wins this game will get the home final i would say and that will be on both teams minds going into this game. There will be some great matchups all over the park in this one and it should be another cacker...

Last year the Vultures came from no where in the last month too snatch 5th and made a classic run too make the gf. can they do it this year. who knows. they can do it, they have done it before

State Association football

Iwent and watched the hornets play uni in a round 16 game of the first division state association competition yesterday. The skills were pretty much non existant and i suppose no one should expect a high level of skills in this type of league, when it's mostly players just going around having a kick and a bit of fun with a beer with their mates at the end of every game. Of course you will always see the the usuall sniping from behind the ball like we did yesterday, when an aspley player was well and truely felled behind the play in a soft act is the best way too put it. but of course there is any video in this league and no umpire or an umpire advisor saw the incident and it will go un punished at the tribunal. The hornets cam back into the game after aw very slow start and looked like if they had a fully fit side. They could have beaten this uni side

Flashback. 2008 aflq grand final. southport v morningside

The game was played at carrara and it was a cracking game of footy. the first quarter was domminated by southport from start to finish. The first goal of the game was kicked in the first minute of the game and the panthers looked rattled from that quick start. Southports midfield got on top and started run rampant with David james having a field day on his wing and danny wise collecting possies at will. Morningside gradually got themselves back into the game late in the quater and started win every contest with Goiugh and lillico playing pivotal roles. Southport led by 23 points at quarter time

The second quarter was a one way battle in this one, with Morningside getting on top of Southport all over the park. Their midfield were domminant throughout the quarted with the likes of holman, spackman and conroy running rampant. A handy player in that quarter for Morningside was Jayden Russ who nullified the run of David James who had possession dried up. Browning was a brilliant in that quarter kicking 2 goals with Matthew Logan put morningside in front. Southport were shut down, but their 2 best players in that quarter were Kurt Nickalus, who was blanketing Kent abey and Luke Jenkins who giving drive off the half back flank. Southport lead at half time by 5 points

The premiership quarter lived up too it's billing. That quarter was a cracker by both teams. Sam Brown was clearly the best player on the park that quater kicking 3 goals in the space of 10 minutes and should have kicked anoth one, but tried too be unselfish by hand passing it off too be intercepted by Clint Watts. Southport just kept their heads above water in that quarter and they can thank Danny Wise and Nickalus again. it should be a cracking last quarter..

What a last quarter it too finish off a great season. It started off like a house on fire. The ball was kicked forward by Southport and a mark was taken by Ben macentee and than it was all turned around when there was an infringement in Morningsides forward line. Instead of a shot on goal for Southport, there was a shot on goal for morningside and hayden willson slotted it and put the siders in front by 2 goals. Another infirngement in the middle and a 50 metre penalty too go with and another shot on goal for Morningside, but this time they missed. a long bomb from Matthew logan and the sider were in front by 3 goals. Than it started too happen for Southport. A gut busting run by Ben Merritt and a mark to David cameron and a long goal pegged the margin back to 2 goals. Southport just started to run and run and Morningside looked shot 4 unanswered goals later Southport had the flag in their keepings

It was a classic grand final between 2 great rivals. jacob Gough was named joe Grant medalist ahead of Danny WISE AND kURT NIKALOUS

THUNDER 4 ROUNDS TO GO

They improved this year from their dissapointing finish to the season laswt year. They were struggling half way through the year and have pushed their way through the rut they were in and started winning games at home and away from home, which they weren't doing at the start of the year. The illett brother have been the standouts for the thunder this year and brett goodes has been a good pick up for the club, with ewing kicking plenty of bags. They could cause a few troubles in the finals..

their last 4 games

Brisbane lLions. they should win this game even though it is played in brisbane. But they will want too a climatize themselves with the surrounding of coorparoo. because they might be playing a final or 2 there in september. The lions still have a stack of players missing from the seniors list and it will be an easy win too the thunder in this one.

Aspley. A game where it could go either way for both teams. The hornets have improved and the thunder will not want too tak the hornets lightly in this one. At graham road, the hornets haven't exactly made it a tough place for visiting teams to play at. they will want to make it extremely tough for the thunder here

Labrador. the game of the round and a very important game for both teams. labrador will need to win for any chance of snagging top spot and the thunder will be wanting to secure 4th spot. the midfirld battle will be a cracker in this game

Br4oadbeach. The last round and will the thunder be still battling for 4th and 5th spot. Broadbeach will be wanting too end the year on a high and at home they will be tough too beat. Another great midfield battle with this game and it should be a good game

Thunder could cause a few heart problems for a few teams come finals time if they get a home final

Morningside 4 rounds to go

Morningsides season has been an up and down one too say the least and they are still a massive chance of finishing on top of the ladde with 4 rounds to go. they have had so many injuries and they all fell in their laps in a space of 3 weeks. Lillico, willson and Connell all were lost too knee injuries and other of the ilk of Kinch, Brown and Price were injure with all sorts of injuries. They are starting too get their best players back and are going too make a run at back 2 back flags

their last games

Mt Gravatt. Cross town rivals and the hatered is every where you look with this battle. They met in last years gf and the vultures were in the game all day until with 10 to go where the siders ran away with it. this game will be a must win for both teams. Mt Gravatt will be looking for a home final at coorparoo and the siders will be looking for top spot on the ladder. it should be a cracker.

Broadbeach. Another game where they should win and win well. this game has troubled the siders before and the cats midfield and korey fulton always has a blinder. But the cats are a tottaly different team too what they use too be and this game should be an easy win to the sides.

Western magpies. this game will be a percentage booster for the siders and really it's not a good thing leading into the finals. they have given the magpies a hiding every time in the last 2 years and nothing will change here..

Redland. Last time they met redlands had every chance to knock off the siders and they just didn't have the ability to kick that crucial goal. this game could be a crucial game for both teams, the siders trying too get top spot and the week off and a home final and redlands trying too get into 5th spot. Morningside should continue their domminance of redlands in this game

Morningside are still the team too beat imo and if they can all stay fit. they will be extremely hard too beat

Labrador 4 rounds to go before the finals

Labrador are having their best season in the state league since they joined the competition in 1996. they seem too be more ballanced all over the park and conditioning thei players well before a run at the finals. Todd featherstone is probably having his best season since he won the grogan meadl. Spider everitt has been a handy pick for them and has played some good football all year and with Tim notting. They put them in good positions every week

their next 4 games will be test of their measure

Western Magpies. they should w2in this game and win it well. Last time they played the Maggies. they won by 17 goals and too be honest they will win by more. But the question is, how many players will they rest again

Redland. This game will test the tigers. Redlands are starting to get a run on and if they can get a sniff of a finals spot they will pounce. i expect the tigers too put a full strength side out on the park that weekend. last time they met. The tigers midfield and defense domminated redlands

Thunder. This will be the tigers biggest test in their run to the finals. The game is being played in Darwin and it had too be moved for a cricket match. The thunder are extremely tough too beat in Darwin and they have only lost once there. this should be a cracking game and the tigers would be looking too cause an upset

Lions. This game is will be where labrador could be chasing top spot or a home final in the first week of the finals. The lions will be just throwing a mickey mouse team out on the park for this game i would say. labrador will want to win this game and win it with a decent margin for percentage wise.

This could be labradors year and they have a real genuine chance winning the flag and could be a good shot in the arm for the club

Charles Barkley Follows McNabb To Washington

SOUTHPORT SHARKS 4 ROUNDS TO GO BEFORE FINALS

At the moment the sharks are sitting on top of the ladder on percentage to labrador. They have looked the class above all year and their new recruits have been the stand out all year long. Danny wise has been their best player easily and should just about run away with the grogan medal this year. Thay have games to go in the home and away season and really they should win all four and take out the mino premiership

Redlands. they have never lost to them and Redlands aren't anything like the team they had last year and even though they are making a decent run to the finals. The sharks should beat them well

Western Magpies. the wipping boys of the comp and they have struggled against all teams including Aspley. Southport should put a cricket score on this mob and nearly send them packing back too the pineapple hotel cup

Mt Gravatt. This could be the game where they could slip up on the run into the finals. Last time they met the sharks ran away with the game in the last qtr and it wasn't that close all day and the sharks were a better side. This time the vultures will have all thei stars back and firing and they can cause an upset here.

Aspley. On paper they should give the hornets a flogging in this game. The hornets have improved this year and they have done a number on a couple of the top teams and they would have a really small chance of knockling the sharks in this one. but the sharks will be too strong in this one

The sharks should finish on top and take the bye with 2 hands and have a red hot crack at the premiership this year

SKILLS SKILLS SKILLS AND SKILLS. NONE EXISTANT AT THE MOMENT

That sums it up too me for the hornets. The skills have absolutely gone out the window for this team and it's pretty ordinary at this level and for quality like these players are is mind boggling. Once again they started off well and were in fron at qtr time with a 3 goal to 2 qtr. In the second qtr it was a grind for both teams with labrador kicking four goals to aspleys 3 and the hornets missed plenty of opportunities go ahead further, but for easy misses and poor skills letting them down. Half time and the boys were pretty confident that they could hold labrador and pounce in the last qtr. Again the 3rd was an almighty struggle for both teams and the skills were very ordinary on both counts, i goal each for the qtr and planty of missed opportunities and the heads looked like they were going too drop. The start too the last qtr for the hornets wasn't a good one and not before long labrador had gotten a break on them and put the game away. This game was just another case of could have been and would have been for the hornets. A weeks break now for them and 4 games left against 4 teams that are ahead of them on the ladder and they can win 2 of them and maybe snag a win against the thunder, becuase they don't travel well at all

the other games this weekend

Mt Gravatt ended broadbeashes chances of playing finals football this year
The Thuander pollished off the magpies
Redland won a thriller over the lions and put a dent in their finals hopes
and the in the rivalry game. morningside won a thiller over the top side southport

CAN ASPLEY KNOCK ANOTHER TOP SIDE OFF BEFORE THE END OF THE SEASON

That is the question leading into the weeks games. This week they travel down to cooke murphy oval to take on the second placed labrador tigers team who are coming off a massive upset of the top side. Last time these 2 teams met, the hornets jumped the tigers with an 8 goal first quarter to have a handy lead at quarter time. But in the end they frittered away a chance of winning the game of footy with stupid mistakes and being out played and out coached. labrador are tpugh too beat down there and this won't be easy and i wonder if labrador will rest a hoast of players again this time like they did last time they met the hornets. Aspleys wall of a defense will have to stop labradors powerfull forward line and aspleys midfield will have too stop the brilliant midfield of labrador to win the game.

MORNINGSIDE SOUTHPORT RIVALRY

The biggest rivalry in queensland foot at the moment and pretty special one. These 2 have massive rivals since Southport joined the qafl in 1982 and there has been some classic battles. The 90's brought out the best of in the rivalry with these 2 facing off in 5 grand finals through the decade, with the sharks winning the ledger 3 to 2. the 2000s they faced off in 3 grand finals with Southport winning 2 and the sider winning 1. Their has been some great games over the years and some great players on both sides.

My recolection of a few game that were classics in queensland footy are. 2006 the first of 4 times they played against each other at carrara. The sharks lead all night and looked like they were going to take the 4 points. But step in David armitage and he took over the game and turned it on it's head and the mighty siders got up by 4 goals. the prelim final that year was a different story. the siders lead all day and took a 2 goal lead into the fought quarter and looked like they were heading to a showdown with zillmere in the grand final. Poor goal kicking coast them in the end and the sharks went onto win the game and the premiership a week later.

2007. The siders won the first game of 4 for the year by 9 points. Come the round 11 clash. the siders were second on the ladder and looking too break a 14 year drought at shark park. the game was close all day with no team looking like a winner and 5 minutes intlo the fourth and with the sharks kicking 3 unanswered goals and looking like winners. The siders kicked into gear and john williams running a muck all over the park. the sider kicked 7 unanswered goals to take the lead and pull away from the sharks for a great win by all. the prelikm final was another different story for the siders. they lead all day even though they were down to 1 on the bench and looking flat all over the park. but by the start of the fourth quarter. the toll started to wear on them and the sharks started to run and run all day. 8 goals to 2 later and they were into another grand final. but this time they got flogged by the vultures

ANOTHER CHANCE GOES MISSING IN THE END FOR THE HORNETS

On Saturday the hornets again blew their chance of shaking the comp up a bit with some stupid football. the first quarter was free flowing affair with the vulture kicking 5-5 to Aspleys 4-5 and the hornets were in the game and anything could happen. They had plenty of the footy and looked alright in patches. The second quarter cost them dearly. indiscipline and bad skill errors turned the games heavily towards the vultures favour and they booted clear of the hornets. I must say some of the umpiring in that second quarter was some of the worst you would ever see in a game of football. I the 2 worst decisions in the quarter were by the same umpire and apparently he is supposed too be the best umpire in our comp. After half time the tide didn't turn our way and the vultures went on their merry way and looked pretty good. the hornets won the last quarter, but it didn't matter in the end. A quarter and a half of stupid football cost them in the end and a good side like the vultures will kill you if you make pretty simple errors in a tight game like this

Can Aspley cause another boile over

Well that's the question that will be asked at graham road tomorrow as the Aspley hornets take on the Mt Gravatt vultures and in game that will shake finals look up. The last 2 meetings the vulture have embarrassed the hornets, with a 17 goal and 18 goal flogging in the last 2 games. since those 2 games there has been a few changes at the hornets and some good ones that have made the team more compettitive. The hornets are a genuine chance in this game of footy and like always they have too be disciplined in the way they go about it. Last time they played at ditmar park, the hornets gave away 10 50 metre penalties and everyone of them resulted in a vultures goal. The vulture have been getting all of their stars back to the fold over the last 2 months and after a shakey start, they starting the jell into a team that no one wants to play come september. the game will be won in the backline and the hornets backline has been nothing short of outstanding lately and if they can keep repelling the vultures moves forward they can get the four points in this one

the proposed new compettion

Lately there has been whispers that there will be a new second tier competition brought in below the afl on the eastern seaboard of Australia. I for one think it would be a great idea to have this kind of competition. It would mean the afl teams reserves sides would get a decent hit out every week instead of playing in an inferior comp and just padding up their stats every week. The qafl hasn't been made better since the induction of the lions reserves 12 years ago, it's probably made the competition worse. The developing players don't get anything out of it other than padding their stats looking good and that's just about it.

With the new gold coast team coming in next year and they will more than likely playing in the qafl next season as well. You would want to hope they get this new comp up and running sooner rather than later. they don't want dilute the other teams in the qafl with 2 afl reserves team in the qafl just their for mickey mouse reasons. my mail is the second tier comp Will look like this

2 qafl teams. the teams might be, aspley and southport
2 qld afl reserves teams
2 Sydney afl reserves teams
1 Sydney afl team
1 act team
NT thunder
and
1 cairns afl team

i have heard morningside were asked but they have knocked it back for reasons that they might not be able to compete in the recruiting stakes and they have really just only got back on their feet money wise. i just hope the 2 qafl teams will be able to field sides in the qafl while they have another side in this second tier comp

ASPLEY SHOW MAGGIES HOW TO PLAY IN A DECENT COMP

The hornets won their 4Th game of season yesterday with a dominant performance over the western magpies. The first qtr was a tight and scrappy contest with the umpires really keeping the magpies in the game with some ordinary decision that would confuse any supporters of the game. By the end of the qtr the hornets were starting too get on top of the magpies and took a 2 point lead into qtr time. After qtr time the hornets took over the game and started winning plenty of football around the ground and the defecnse stood up and repelled everything the magpies tried to send their way. The hornets midfield generated plenty of run and the hornets kicked 7 straight to the magpies 1 goal and the game was virtually over. The 3rd was a bit of a struggle and the hornets just went on their merry way and slotted another 4 goals too the magpies 2 goals and the game was well and truely over. The 4th qtr was just a formality and the hornets kicked another 6 goals to ram home a very easy win in the end. the magpies have problems all over the place and they should be playing back in the pineapple hotel cup competition. they're out of their depth in this competition
